Data Sources and Update Policy

Data shown was last updated in May 2026. Coverage, pricing, and formulary outcomes can change by state, insurer, pharmacy channel, and individual eligibility.

We source state availability and provider support details from official provider pages, public policy documentation, and direct editorial verification. See our methodology and disclosures for sourcing standards and commercial relationship transparency.

Always confirm current terms directly with the provider and your insurance plan before enrollment.

How GLP-1 State Coverage Works

GLP-1 telehealth providers must have licensed prescribers in your state to write a valid prescription. A clinician licensed in California cannot prescribe for a patient physically located in Texas. This is a fundamental telehealth regulation that applies to all providers.

However, the medication itself can be shipped across state lines. A compounding pharmacy in Florida can ship semaglutide to a patient in Oregon, as long as the prescribing clinician holds an active license in Oregon. This is why some providers have broad coverage while others are limited.

After confirming state availability, use See providers that accept your insurance to evaluate prior authorization support and plan compatibility.

States with Limited Options

Some states have fewer provider choices due to prescriber licensing limitations or shipping restrictions. If you live in one of these states, we recommend checking both available providers before making a decision.

  • Alaska — 3 providers available : Limited options due to shipping logistics. Ro and Henry Meds offer cold-chain shipping.
  • Hawaii — 3 providers available : Limited options due to interstate shipping regulations. Ro and Henry Meds ship cold-chain.
  • Rhode Island — 3 providers available : Limited options — only Ro and Hims serve Rhode Island for GLP-1.
  • Vermont — 3 providers available : Limited options — only Ro and Hims serve Vermont for GLP-1.

Why Coverage Varies by State

Key takeaway: Provider coverage depends on prescriber licensing, not pharmacy location. As providers expand their clinician networks, coverage in underserved states typically improves within 6-12 months.
  • Prescriber licensing — each provider must hire clinicians licensed in your state. Smaller providers may only cover 30-40 states
  • Compounding regulations — states have different rules for compounding pharmacies, affecting providers that use compounded GLP-1 medications
  • Shipping logistics — Alaska and Hawaii require cold-chain air shipping, which some providers do not support
  • Market demand — providers typically prioritize states with higher demand before expanding to smaller markets
  • State telehealth laws — some states have stricter requirements for telehealth prescribing that may limit provider options

Insurance Coverage by State

Insurance coverage for GLP-1 medications varies significantly by state. Here is what to know:

  • Medicaid — coverage varies widely. Some states cover GLP-1s for weight management, others only for type 2 diabetes. Contact your state Medicaid office
  • Medicare Part D — may cover GLP-1 medications if prescribed for diabetes, but typically not for weight loss alone
  • Commercial insurance — most major plans cover FDA-approved GLP-1s (Wegovy, Zepbound) with prior authorization. Compounded versions are cash-pay only
  • HSA/FSA — GLP-1 medications prescribed by a licensed provider generally qualify as eligible medical expenses in all states

Frequently Asked Questions

Are GLP-1 telehealth providers available in every state?

No. Provider availability varies by state due to licensing requirements for prescribers and pharmacy regulations. Most major providers operate in 40+ states, but coverage in Alaska, Hawaii, and some smaller states may be limited. Always check availability before signing up.

Which states have the most GLP-1 provider options?

California, Texas, Florida, and New York have the widest coverage with all 6 major providers available. Other states with full 6-provider coverage include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and several others.

Can I use a provider from another state?

Your clinician must be licensed in the state where you are physically located at the time of the consultation. However, the pharmacy can ship across state lines in most cases. This is why some providers serve more states than others — it depends on where their clinicians hold licenses.

Why are some states excluded by certain providers?

Providers exclude states for several reasons: prescriber licensing limitations, state-specific telehealth regulations, compounding pharmacy restrictions, or shipping logistics (especially for Alaska and Hawaii). Coverage expands over time as providers hire clinicians licensed in additional states.

Does insurance coverage vary by state?

Yes. State Medicaid programs have different GLP-1 coverage policies. Some states cover GLP-1 medications for weight management, others only for type 2 diabetes. Commercial insurance coverage also varies. Check with your state Medicaid office or insurance provider for specific coverage details.

How long does shipping take to my state?

Most providers ship within 1-5 business days via cold-chain packaging. Contiguous US states typically receive orders in 2-3 days. Alaska and Hawaii may take 5-7 days. Rural areas may have longer delivery windows regardless of state.

Do any states require in-person visits for GLP-1 prescriptions?

GLP-1 medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide) are not controlled substances, so no state requires an in-person visit specifically for these prescriptions. However, some states have general telehealth prescribing rules that may affect the initial consultation process. Most providers conduct intake via video call.

What happens if I move to a state where my provider does not operate?

Contact your provider before moving. Many providers can transfer your care to a clinician licensed in your new state. If your current provider does not operate in your new state, you will need to find a new provider and go through their intake process.

Do state laws on compounding pharmacies affect my options?

Yes. States have varying regulations for compounding pharmacies. Providers that use FDA-registered 503B outsourcing facilities can generally ship to all states where they have licensed prescribers. States with stricter compounding regulations may have fewer provider options.
